The Importance of Calcium for Celiac Disease Sufferers
And why you need Vitamin D to absorb it.
Welcome to this week’s edition of The Coeliac Scientist. Today, I want to discuss a topic that's close to my heart and crucial for all celiac disease sufferers: calcium intake and bone health. Six years ago, when I was diagnosed with celiac disease, I discovered that I also had osteopenia, a condition that precedes osteoporosis, or brittle bone disease. This revelation led me on a journey to understand the importance of calcium in maintaining good bone health, especially for those with celiac disease.
As a chemist, I delved into the science behind calcium absorption and realised that simply taking calcium supplements wasn't enough. You see, celiac disease affects the small intestine's ability to absorb key minerals and elements, including calcium. This means that even if we consume enough calcium-rich foods or supplements, our bodies may struggle to absorb and utilise them effectively.
So, what's the solution? Celiac disease sufferers must ensure that their calcium supplements include Vitamin D. Why? Because Vitamin D plays a crucial role in calcium absorption. When Vitamin D is present, calcium can be bound in a way that facilitates absorption in the body, ensuring that it reaches our bones where it's needed most.
But why is calcium so important, you may ask? Well, calcium is a vital mineral that contributes to bone strength and density. Without an adequate intake of calcium, celiac disease sufferers are at risk of developing osteopenia or osteoporosis, which can lead to fragile bones and an increased risk of fractures.
So, what can we do to ensure we're getting enough calcium? First and foremost, it's essential to incorporate calcium-rich foods into our diets. Think dairy products like milk, cheese, and yoghurt, as well as leafy green vegetables, almonds, and fortified foods. However, given the challenges of absorbing calcium with celiac disease, supplementation may also be necessary.
When choosing a calcium supplement, opt for one that contains Vitamin D to enhance absorption. Additionally, consider consulting with a healthcare professional or a registered dietitian who can provide personalized recommendations based on your individual needs and health status.
Prioritising calcium intake is paramount for celiac disease sufferers to maintain optimal bone health. By understanding the importance of calcium absorption and making informed choices about supplementation and dietary habits, we can take proactive steps to support our bone health and overall well-being.
As always, I encourage you to share your thoughts and experiences on this topic. Together, let's continue to learn, support, and empower one another on our journey with celiac disease.
Wishing you good health and strong bones,
